I, the steward, have a big secret. I will share it if you promise not to tell anyone. Promise? OK. Here goes. My name is Kari and I don’t like to spend a lot of time in the kitchen.
“Hey but that’s no secret,” you reply.
OK you got me there. The world knows that this blog is about making magic in the kitchen, i.e. putting in the least kitchen time with the most results. So that is not the revelation. The truth is that this big secret is about a little packet that allows me to make a meal in less than 5 minutes and avoid high fructose packed salad dressings on the road. I am talking about a salad dressing sachet… and these in particular. I usually go for the “basil and thyme” but the “vinegar with garlic” is equally delicious.
I usually have this salad once per day… sometimes even twice depending on how lazy I am feeling.
Ingredients: 1/2 can tuna packed in water/brine, 3-4 leaves Romaine/cos lettuce, 4-inch cucumber (cut a longer one short if needed), 1/3 pack Knorr Salad Seasoning, 1 tablespoon Grapeseed oil/Extra Virgin Olive Oil, A squeeze of a lemon (optional).
Method: Wash and slice veggies, drain water from tuna, and empty half of tuna in salad bowl and store the rest in a container in the fridge. Add veggies, oil, Knorr powdered salad dressing and fresh lemon juice. Taste. Add salt and pepper if desired. Eat and be merry.
Lunch Box: Pack tuna with oil and dressing separately from veggies. Make certain to wash and dry veggies by spinning. Put veggies and an ‘un-squeezed’ half lemon in same container.Pack both containers in a cooler bag with an icepack or two. When breaking out for lunch, mix all together and add lemon juice.
CHEF’S NOTE: I do not approve of this laziness (using store-bought salad seasoning) even with Extra Virgin Olive oil, fresh lemon juice and salt and freshly cracked pepper added.
STEWARD’S NOTE: The chef is a purist and he’s not home to make me salads everyday (like he did with that divine Slow Roasted Lemon Chicken Garlic Salad he made today).
***2018 UPDATE: You can also use your favourite seasoning mix or bouillon if you cannot get this salad mix in your country/area. I have not seen these since we moved from the UAE two years ago.

Knorr used to equal MSG to me, but I have seen products of theirs that are without lately. What about MSG in these salad dressings?
Chef and Steward says
Anja, it does contain msg, so if you are allergic or avoiding it, you shouldn’t use this. Asian (Oriental and South East Asian) food is generally loaded with msg. It is convenient though because it is dry and easy to walk with.

What an easy salad to make. But I get dizzy whenever I use knorr seasonings.

I’ve never had these seasoning packs… thanks for sharing!

I love a food blogger that feels as equally lazy as I do when it comes to making food (unlike my baking, I like easy recipes for cooking!) And tuna salads are dishes I make way too often for my own good. Love the idea of using the easy dressing, too 🙂
The Duo Dishes says
You guys are funny. Sometimes you do need to go the easy route and fix something quick. No judgement here. 🙂
